The Australasian Drilling segment from January-February 2013 highlights new technology in packer testing on coiled tubing, particularly in the Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry. Packer testing, also known as Drill Stem Testing (DST), is crucial for assessing the permeability of coal seams, which is a key economic factor. The introduction of Diagnostic Fracture Injection Tests (DFITs) has enhanced testing for hard coals found at depth in northern Queensland. PT Gas Fields Testing Indonesia pioneered the use of coiled tubing-enabled packer testing, with Perth-based Inflatable Packers International (IPI) playing a significant role in global CSG well testing. IPI’s ST Formation Tester was successfully used in Indonesia and Queensland, demonstrating the benefits of coiled tubing, such as eliminating rod leakage and enabling real-time monitoring. Pro-Test, a well testing specialist in Queensland, has also utilized IPI’s systems to improve cost-effectiveness and efficiency in DST testing. The advancements in packer testing technology are making a notable impact on the CSG industry, offering rapid and efficient testing solutions.
