A paper presented by our Founder and CEO, Clem Rowe at the International Drill Conference conducted in Perth, Western Australia. Clem jointly authored this document whilst being Engineering Director at his previous company in 1992. He has since gone on to establish IPI Packers and further developed the inflatable packer technology and its applications, expanding to oil and gas, mining, groundwater, geotechnical, geothermal applications and more. The paper covers the basics of inflatable packers, including types, pressure ratings, inflation systems and methods, and deployment methods.
Inflatable packers have been a cornerstone in the oil industry for over forty years and have since expanded into various fields such as water well, mineral, geotechnical, and foundation drilling industries. These versatile tools are used for a range of applications including permeability testing, fracture testing, chemical injection, formation fluid sampling, casing/pile grouting, borehole plugging, and downhole fishing tools. The construction of an inflatable packer involves a cylindrical, elastic membrane sealed at both ends, which inflates radially to seal and anchor in place. There are different types of inflatable packers, including unreinforced rubber, metal sheath, and fabric/wire reinforced rubber, each suited for specific pressure ratings and applications. The selection of the appropriate packer type is crucial, considering factors such as geometrical constraints, inflation fluid type, inflation method, deployment method, and ancillary operations.
Key Points:
- Usage: Widely used in oil, water well, mineral, geotechnical, and foundation drilling industries.
- Applications: Permeability testing, fracture testing, chemical injection, formation fluid sampling, casing/pile grouting, borehole plugging, and downhole fishing tools.
- Construction: Cylindrical, elastic membrane sealed at the ends, inflating radially.
- Types:
- Unreinforced Rubber: Low pressure rating, used for shallow groundwater monitoring.
- Metal Sheath: High pressure rating, used for high-temperature sealing systems and casing repairs.
- Fabric/Wire Reinforced Rubber: Broad range of applications, commonly used in drilling.
- Selection Criteria: Geometrical constraints, inflation fluid type, inflation method, deployment method, and ancillary operations.
